Schaefer Civic Fund Announced

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore lost a champion when William Donald Schaefer died Monday.

Friends request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the William Donald Schaefer Civic Fund.  This is part of the Baltimore Community Foundation and will honor Schaefer and support community-led projects through their Neighborhood Grants Program.

"Governor Schaefer moved his Civic Fund to the Baltimore Community Foundation to perpetuate his favorite activity---strengthening neighborhoods in and around the city.  He added to the fund with unused campaign funds and proceeds from the sale of his house.  He hoped that others would want to join with him in making sure that there would always be a source of grant money for projects to make neighborhoods better," said his longtime friend and former aide Lainy LeBow-Sachs.

More than $2 million has been distributed to scores of neighborhoods.  The money goes toward projects like community gardens, festivals and neighborhood signs.

"Throughout his life, Governor William Donald Schaefer remained  a champion of Baltimore's many neighborhoods," said BCF President and CEO Tom Wilcox.  "As mayor, Schaefer made it a priority to help residents complete community projects to make their neighborhoods stronger.  BCF is proud to carry on the legacy of Governor Schaefer."
