Savage River Protection Advocates Holding Public Meeting
FROSTBURG, Md. (AP) — Advocates for protecting the Savage River in western Maryland are holding a public meeting in Frostburg.
Brent Walls of the Potomac Riverkeeper Network says the Tuesday night meeting agenda includes information from a landowner survey.
He says about 20 of more than 270 landowners participated, and most responses were positive.
The network announced the project in September in partnership with the Mid-Atlantic Council of Trout Unlimited and the Savage River Watershed Association.
They want to create a management plan for the 74,000-acre watershed. They're also seeking to make the Savage River Maryland's first federally designated "wild and scenic" river.
The designation would help a local council obtain funds to protect the river through voluntary stewardship programs and regulation.
The Youghiogheny River is a state-designated "scenic and wild" river.
