Roberts to DL: Now What?
Life is not always what you plan, it's how you adjust to what you didn't plan. For the Orioles, that's now a life without lead-off hitter and starting second baseman Brian Roberts. Roberts going to the 15-day disabled list is yet another blow to a team that's stubbed it's toe out of the gate with a 1-5 season start. Julio Lugo will play second in Roberts place and manager Dave Trembley says he'll use different line-ups that will probably include some appearances by Justin Turner who's called up from Norfolk to help fill-in in the infield. Say what you want- the loss of Roberts is a MAJOR blow to a team that can't afford setbacks in a competitive existence that includes little to no room for error (or injury). You can hearken back to Trembley's pre-season mantra of "no excuses, " but not having Roberts is an understandable excuse should the O's continue their offensive struggles. That being said- there's no category for "losses with good excuses" in the standings. It's a win-lose proposition and for the O's, life has gotten a lot tougher.
