Rabid Raccoon Left At Baltimore Co. Animal Services By Woman
BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) -- A previously unidentified woman left a raccoon on the premises of Baltimore County Animal Services after the site had closed on Thursday.
Police said the woman has since been identified.
The animal was later tested and found positive for rabies.
"If someone is exposed, it can be deadly," Gregory Branch, Director of Health and Human Services of Baltimore County, said.
The Department of Health is seeking information leading to the identity of the woman and anyone who might have had contact with the animal.
Cameras outside of the facility show a Caucasian woman with shoulder-length brunette hair leaving the raccoon behind. The woman was driving a black pick up truck.
Officials stressed that the woman is not in trouble, but just want to make sure that she is healthy.
"We're concerned for her welfare rather than later," Branch said.
The Baltimore County Department of Health is asking this person or anyone who may have had direct exposure to the raccoon to seek immediate medical attention from your personal healthcare provider or visit a hospital emergency room.
Branch said health officials are concerned that the woman did not know the animal was sick.
