Man Charged In Shooting Of Morgan State Football Player
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—A man is under arrest and charged with first-degree attempted murder after police say he shot a Morgan State University student.
Rochelle Ritchie has more on the victim and the suspect.
The football player is recovering from non-life threatening injuries. His alleged shooter is facing serious time in prison.
WJZ obtains footage of Tyrell Okoro, 20, during happier times as he signed his letter of intent to Morgan State University's football team.
"After a lot of recruiting I decided to play for the Morgan State Bears," Okoro said.
His football career would nearly come to an end Friday afternoon.
Just before 1 p.m. Baltimore City Police say 20-year-old Keith Robertson--who is not a Morgan State student-- would walk onto campus and shoot Okoro near the Thurgood Marshall Apartments.
"What we know early on is this was a dispute between two individuals," Anthony Guglielmi, Baltimore City police spokesman.
Police say Robertson fired several shots, hitting Okoro in the stomach and sending other students running for safety.
"I was actually walking right toward it, and then you heard the gunshots and me and friends ran the other way," said Cantreal Williams, student.
Sky Eye Chopper 13 was over the scene showing several people being taken in for questioning.
A semi-automatic handgun is believed to have been used to shoot the 6'4", 320 pound lineman, who was found shortly after the shooting.
Robertson is facing first-degree attempted murder charges after confessing to the crime.
This is the second shooting on the campus of Morgan State University in less than three months. The first shooting critically injured a student.
The student survived, and Kelly Lamont Ellerbee was arrested.
"Being an open campus here in Baltimore, we work closely in partnership to keep each other safe," said Jarrett Carter Sr., university spokesman.
Students say while the violence has no reflection on the quality of their education, it is certainly distracting.
"This is a college campus. This is not what my mother sent me here for," said freshman Najee Douglas.
The victim is a sophomore from New York.
