Phone Recording Leads To Guilty Plea In Gun Charge

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore prosecutors say a man pleaded guilty to a gun charge after he was recorded bragging to his girlfriend on a jailhouse telephone that he could beat the charge.

Jermaine Davis was sentenced Monday to five years in prison.

Davis initially pleaded not guilty, but that changed shortly after prosecutors disclosed the recording to the judge.

The 29-year-old had been convicted twice of felony drug charges, making it illegal for him to have a gun. He was arrested Jan. 3 by officers who smelled marijuana. Prosecutors say the officers saw the butt of a handgun in Davis' jacket pocket.

The city State's Attorney's office says Davis told his girlfriend on the phone that he knew his fingerprints weren't on the gun because he wore gloves while handing it.
