P.G. Schools Head Proposes Pay Freeze, Sports Cuts
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. --
The Prince George's County schools superintendent has proposed a budget that would freeze employees' pay and eliminate middle school sports programs.
The budget proposal released Thursday by William Hite Jr. calls for about $1.7 billion for fiscal year 2012 — an increase of $49 million more than current levels.
Cuts would also be made to school administration and support staff. After-school baseball, softball, basketball and soccer in the middle schools also would be eliminated, saving $800,000.
Matthew Stanski, the school system's chief financial officer, says officials understand the state's fiscal challenges but that they want to ask for what they need to operate the district.
