Owings Mills Gets A Wegmans, Revitalization

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (WJZ) -- Baltimore County expects to get a major economic shot in the arm with a new Wegmans anchoring a new development in the heart of Owings Mills.

Pat Warren reports on the bold plan for the old Solo Cup Factory site.

The Solo Cup Factory put paychecks in pockets for generations. Now the Owings Mills site is being reinvented as a place to go to put food on the table as Wegmans prepares to open on Reisterstown Road.

"We're really excited. First of all, Wegmans is extremely popular. Where else can you go food shopping and also have a workout?" said County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.

That's right. The Foundry Row Wegmans customers will have 110,000 square feet of food choices.

"I think choice is always a good thing," said one shopper.

And Wegmans gets the ball rolling.

"What will happen is other businesses want to then locate next to Wegmans, and this shopping center at Foundry Row is attracting a lot of other national retailers who follow Wegmans," Kamenetz said.

"I love shoes, I love salons, I love food," said Karen Segall. "I'm looking forward to it."

While Wegmans will offer all you can eat, there's an added benefit: the new Foundry Row will include LifeBridge Health for walk-in attention to health and wellness.

"You can expect to see your physician, you can expect to get your primary care checkups, you can expect to have a health and wellness partner right there as you also happen to get food shopping done," said LifeBridge Health Senior Vice President Brian White. "It's very convenient, it's very accessible."

And a benefit to the economic health of the county.

"It's a good thing: build up the area even more. You know, Owings Mills closing down, rebuilding--so it's a good thing," said Wanda Hardy.

Wegmans is to open next September.

Foundry Row is expected to support nearly 3,100 jobs. It is a $140 million, 50-acre development project by the same company that revitalized Hunt Valley.
