O's win a wild one vs. KC
Once again, Kevin Millwood cruised through the Royals' lineup the first time through like he did with the Mariners last week. But he was even better this time out. Millwood retired the first 13 Royals before giving up a single to center to Jose Guillen in the fifth where he eventually fell apart and allowed three runs in the inning. However, he bounced back and tossed three more scoreless innings to end his night with 10 hits, three runs (all earned) and seven strikeouts over eight.
Millwood was great... But the story was Luke Scott, who got to last year's Cy Young Award winner by hitting two home runs, both off fastballs to put the Orioles in the game, 3-2. Corey Patterson, the O's newest leadoff hitter, tied it up with a solo shot in the eighth off Blake Wood to tie the score at three.
Headed into extra innings.... The O's couldn't muster a run off reliever Kyle Farnsworth in the ninth but they got to Bryan Bullington in the tenth. Garrett Atkins grounded out (and is now 0 for his last 11 at-bats), Julio Lugo singled to left, Corey Patterson walked and Cesar Izturis reached on a Bullington fielding error (he missed the bag on a 3-1 play) and Nick Markakis singled to center which scored Lugo for the winning run.
Matt Albers pitched a perfect ninth and Alfredo Simon got out of a jam in the tenth when he had two on and two out (Kendall singled and Butler walked) by striking out Guillen.
The Orioles' offense has struggled all season -- but oddly enough, they have beat some of the best pitchers in baseball this year (Beckett, Liriano, Lackey, Pavano) and now Greinke. Quite impressive.
The O's now head to Texas for a two-game series before heading to DC for the "Beltway Series" against the Nationals.
Tune into 105.7 for post game reaction from the Orioles' clubhouse as well as the Royals' new manager Ned Yost and KC's losing pitcher Bryan Bullington.
