O's complete sweep of Red Sox
Boy have things changed in Orioles Land. Dave Trembley said he had a feeling the Orioles would win today when he got to the ballpark... .and when approached the podium after Sunday's extra-innings win he said "What a great weekend." The manager wanted quality pitching (he got it from Millwood, Ohman and Albers), good defense (the O's completed three double plays, caught Scutaro stealing third and Reimold made a perfect throw to Tatum to get Varitek at the plate in the eighth... to name a few, and timely hitting, which he got in the 10th inning when Ty Wigginton hit the game-winner. The Orioles are a happy bunch, the manager is smiling and the city of Baltimore finally got that boost of confidence they've been waiting for.
For me, the key to the O's success, aside from the fact that they're simply playing baseball with more confidence, is that they are playing solid defense. And Sunday was a perfect example of that. Miguel Tejada gunned one to first from third to get Marco Scutaro for the second out in the sixth, (Scutaro was also caught stealing third in the first), and the Os made a key double play in the 10th (6-4-3), one of three, to get out of the inning with Pedroia on deck.
And of course, Wigginton came up big to seal the sweep in the 10th after Papelbon made a throwing error to first that moved Markakis to second where he eventually scored on Wiggy's single.
Good stuff all around. It's about time.
