O's bats come alive late vs. Yanks

Manager Juan Samuel had a short session with the media today ... it was fairly quiet around the Orioles team with the Yankees in town for a three-game series. Few injury updates before breaking down the game:

- Brian Roberts suffered another setback and was held from playing in an extended spring game. He will visit with doctors this week. Tune in tomorrow as BRob joins Scott and Jeremy on the Scott Garceau Show.

- Alfredo Simon is "close" to returning to the big league club.

- Mike Gonzalez threw one inning of extended spring and allowed one hit.

In other news, The Yankees got to Kevin Millwood early... Jeter lead off with a single and Swisher, the No. 2 hitter, crushed a two-run homerun to put the Yankees on the board early and Curtis Granderson hit a grand slam in the third to make it 6-0.

The O's put two on the board in the fourth when Matt Wieters and Lou Montanez both recorded RBI singles. Ty Wigginton then added an RBI single in the fifth to make it 6-3.
Millwood was removed in the sixth, on the hook to takes his seventh loss of the season and replaced by Frank Mata. Mark Hendrickson then loaded the bases for Matt Albers who gave up a bases-clearing double to Nick Swisher and then a two-run home run to Mark Teixeira ... 12-3 Yankees. Adam Jones added a two-run homer in the eighth to make it 12-5 and Markakis recorded a two-run double in the ninth to make it 12-7.

On the other end, Phil Hughes once again was solid. Hughes, who entered the game 7-1 with a 2.54 ERA, faced the O's for the third time this season and earned his second win against Baltimore (He took a no decision on 4/27 here at Camden Yards.) In 18.2 innings against the O's this season (three starts), Hughes has given up 17 hits and just five runs while walking only five and striking out 13.
In what looked like what could be an ugly loss for the Orioles, who have now dropped nine of the last 10 games to the Yankees this season, the bats came alive late ut it was too little, too late. The O's fell to 2-3 in Baltimore vs. the Yankees and are currently 0-6 at Yankee Stadium this year. The O's have two more games at Camden Yards vs. the Yankees this week before facing the Mets for a three-games series at home.

Juan Samuel is now 1-3 in the four games he has managed in Baltimore.
