Orioles Food Drive Is This Weekend

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- There are two big events at Camden Yards Friday night and this weekend. The first is a three-game series between the Orioles and the Yankees; the second is the 30th Annual Food & Funds Drive. The Orioles are teaming up with WJZ and MASN to benefit the Maryland Food Bank.

Marcus Washington reports donations are desperately needed this time of year.

That time of year has rolled around again, as we gear up for the 30th Annual WJZ, Orioles and MASN Food & Fund Drive, benefiting the Maryland Food Bank.

"It's really important. It's great to get together with the other wives and girlfriends on the team and just do what we can to help out, to give back," said one.

"Hunger is definitely an issue that we're still battling in our state, and this time of year is a really critical time for us, because our pantry reserves actually get very low. People don't think about making those donations of food in the summertime," said a Food Bank official.

That's where you come in to help. This weekend at each gate at Camden Yards, you can donate non-perishable food items and money that will benefit the Maryland Food Bank.

Each year, we call, and Baltimore responds. Just last year, more than 7,000 pounds of food were collected, along with more than $37,000. We're hoping to do even more this year -- with your help.

"Baltimore rallies around the team so much that this is our chance to rally around Baltimore," one woman said.

We'll be collecting donations all weekend, as part of our continuing community commitment.
