N.Y. Cops Searching For Missing Md. College Student

WAYLAND, N.Y. (WJZ) -- A college student from Frederick disappeared near his upstate New York school.  His parents here in Maryland are waiting for answers.

Andrea Fujii spoke with George Delany's parents and investigators about the strange disappearance.

Delany's parents say their 21-year-old son was struggling in his new political science major at the Rochester Institute of Technology in upstate New York.

"He needed his father," said his father, George Delany.

So he drove home to have a talk on Thursday.  Delany decided not to drop out.  Both parents talked to him Saturday morning and then his phone kept going straight to voicemail.  They didn't think anything of it until police found his car in a wooded area.

"Sure you've got my eight-year-old car, but where's my 21-year-old son?" he said.  "We called his roommates and they said, `He was going out for a few minutes and he never came back.'"

His car was abandoned Saturday afternoon near a road that would have been the way to drive from Rochester to Frederick.  But he hasn't used his ATM card or his cell phone since Saturday; it's as if he vanished.

"I don't know where.  He's out there somewhere. I know you are, George.  Contact us," said his mother, Susan Delany.

New York State Police spent nine hours searching the area near where the car had been found in a ditch.  Police say a witness reported to have seen another car pulled over to help the college student.  That's the last sighting.

"I think on Saturday, he decided he needed to take time off and somehow he didn't get all the way home," he said.

"I'm a zombie. I'm empty and I just want to hear something soon, and I know it's going to be positive," she  said.

His parents say they will remain in Maryland, holding out hope that George will return home.
