New York Super Bowl, Why Not?
Today history was made as the first outdoor Super Bowl to be played in a cold weather city finally has a venue. It took 4 ballets but New York will be hosting Super Bowl XLVIII. I am so on the fence with this issue, I may contradict myself more than I actually make valid points in this blog. Truth is I attended the only Super Bowl to EVER be played in the elements. EVER is a very long time guys, so picture me sitting there drenched as I think back to videos of Elway's helicopter plunge for a first down, Brett's running through the field with his helmet in the air as the clock struck 0:00. All done on beautiful green grass mind you, and I am in the freezing rain watching the 2 best teams in the NFL fumble the ball over on consecutive downs. The Super Bowl is the NFL's marquee match up and should be played without any limitations and should showcase the best your football team has to offer. Right?? I am not so sure, because as a fan I truly believe the elements are a piece of the game. It's what makes the NFL what it is. It's what separates itself from every other league, as in the NFL nothing will keep the warriors off of the field. Case in point, last year I traveled to Buffalo for a game. It was week 17 and might have been the most meaningless game I've ever lived through. From QT 1 to QT 4 the snow fell from the skies nonstop and needless to say it was absolutely freezing. In the many games I've attended this was the only one where the entire crowd stood from start to finish. My team lost by 4 touchdowns but I couldn't believe how much fun it was to finally be a part of one of those games you only see on TV. You know, when the field is white from endzone to endzone and the yardlines have to be cleaned off just to see. This is football and maybe from time to time, its premier game should be decided in the freezing rain or snow. I've been to 2 Super Bowl's, one of which was played in the rain while the other was played in pristine conditions. The dome team which could not play in the elements dominated throughout the rain filled evening but could not do so with the clear blue sky. Go Figure. The bottom line is football's about who can overcome and who's the best on that day. And on that day in 2014, the NFL's best will have to overcome the weather. Should be interesting.
