New Maryland Driver's Licenses and IDs Available Monday
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Marylanders can begin getting the state's newly redesigned driver's licenses and identification cards starting Monday, according to the Motor Vehicle Administration.
"Maryland last updated the driver's license in 2003 and the old technology is vulnerable to fraud. The new cards also proudly feature iconic Maryland symbols and a colorful Maryland-themed background," officials told WJZ last month.
The new cards were unveiled May 9 at a MVA branch office in Annapolis.
They have a changeable image, raised print, unique barcode and other features to insure identity.
"Those are the things that we know about, so if you try to pass off a fake license to any law enforcement official we know right away based on the security features they have in place," said Lt. Col. Anthony Satchell, with the Maryland State Police.
Officials also announced that cards will no longer be issued over-the-counter to improve security.
New licenses are issued when it comes time for a renewal, but officials say your address must be current because all the cards will be sent by mail.
There will be no changes in the I.D. or licensing fees.
