Several People Reported Injured In Multi-Car Crash With Tractor-Trailer Car Carrier
BEL AIR, Md (WJZ) -- Maryland State Police are investigating a multi-car accident that injured several people. A car-carrier tractor-trailer collided with 14 cars happened on Friday evening, at around 5 p.m. at the 1700 block of Bel Air Road, near Plaza Ford.
The commercial vehicle was traveling southbound on Route 1 Bel Air Road when for an unknown reason it crossed over into the northbound lanes striking several passenger vehicles. Traffic was also brought to a complete stop.
People on scene tell WJZ the whole thing played out like something out of a movie.
Friday, in the heart of rush hour, first responders reported to the scene in 1700 block of Bel Air Road. More than a dozen cars caught in the path of tractor-trailer loaded with cars that crossed over into oncoming traffic. Maryland State Police are now investigating and say seven people were transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
WJZ spoke with the driver of the truck
"Things like this shoudn't happen, you know people need to be more careful on the roads," he says.
The driver didn't want to give his name but says he crossed over the double yellow line to avoid hitting another car.
"A car did cross my path and you know it's hard to avoid it when you see cars to the right to your right lane when I'm on my left lane."
Those involved in the crash tell WJZ it was unlike anything that they have ever seen.
"You see it in movies, but to see something like that coming at you. It definitely stays with you," says one witness.
"At one point it looked like he was airborne," says another witness.
One woman tells WJZ she had her grandkids in the car. She says there was no time to react, but fortunately, her car was spared.
"Just say a prayer. Really, time to say a prayer and it stopped right at the car."
No charges have been filed at this time.
