Md. Superfund Cleanup Site Shows Progress

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says a stream affected by a Superfund site near Cumberland is healthy but not vibrant more than 15 years after the pollution source was capped.

The Cumberland Times-News reported Monday that remedial project manager Bob Wallace says some contaminants are still present in the groundwater and a small tributary of Evitts Creek near the dump site on Limestone Road.

Wallace says the EPA will conduct five-year reviews indefinitely, and that the impervious caps installed in 1994 may
eventually need replacement.

The site was sealed and 18 homes connected to city water after a 1982 study found heavy metals including chromium, lead and cadmium in the surface and ground waters.
