Md. Senate Weighs College Break For Immigrant Kids
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Children of illegal immigrants would get to pay in-state tuition rates for Maryland colleges, but would first have to graduate community college, under a bill making its way through the Maryland Senate.
Sen. Victor Ramirez, D-Prince George's, the bill's lead sponsor, said Wednesday that senators could take a final vote on the bill early next week.
The Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee changed the bill to require that children of illegal immigrants complete community college or receive an associate's degree before they qualify for in-state tuition rates.
The proposal mirrors federal legislation which died in Congress late last year.
