Mayor: D.C. Residents Shouldn't Need Guns For Safety
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Washington Mayor Vincent Gray says he remains a strong proponent of gun control laws and is troubled to know more people are purchasing guns in the city.
Asked Tuesday about news that more guns were being purchased in wealthier neighborhoods of the city than in those with the most crime, Gray told a story about his childhood.
Gray says his father kept a gun in their apartment while he was growing up. His older brother found the gun and was cleaning it when Gray went to the bathroom. Then he heard a loud boom.
Gray says his brother didn't realize there was a bullet in the gun and had fired it right where Gray had been standing.
The mayor says he doesn't want people to feel like they need guns at home to be safe because that can lead to more accidents with weapons.
