Maryland Weather: Alert Day Issued For Winter Weather Through Friday Morning

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- An Alert Day is in effect through Friday morning as a wintry mix will likely create slick roads.

The most significant icing threat is for western Maryland.

An Ice Storm Warning is in effect for Garrett and Allegany Counties through 10 a.m. Friday.

Travel will be nearly impossible with ice accumulations of one-tenth of an inch and snow and sleet accumulations of less than once inch are expected.

Power outages and tree damage are likely.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Washington, Frederick, northern Baltimore, northwest Montgomery, northwest Howard and northwest Harford counties until 10 a.m. Friday.

Ice accumulations of around one-tenth of an inch are expected with snow and sleet accumulations less than a half inch possible.

Keep in mind that icy spots will be possible throughout the day and become even more of an issue this evening into Friday morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory for southern Baltimore, central and southeast Montgomery, central and southeast Howard, southeast Harford and Cecil counties is in effect from 7 p.m. tonight through 7 a.m. Friday.

As far as the timing of the precipitation, some light snow and sleet will occur at times today but a prolonged period of freezing rain this evening and overnight will bring us the greatest threat for icing.

Temperatures will bottom out in the low 30s tonight with BWI likely staying just above freezing.

After 10 or 11 a.m. Friday, any precipitation across central and western Maryland will transition to plain rain and should taper through the early afternoon.

Highs on Friday will be near 50°.
