Lloyd Elliott, Former GWU President, Dies

WASHINGTON (AP) -- George Washington University says Lloyd Elliott, who served as university president from 1965 until 1988, has died.

A university spokeswoman says Elliott died Tuesday at George Washington University Hospital. He was 94.

Elliott, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, previously served as president of the University of Maine. During his tenure at GW, numerous buildings, including three libraries at its Foggy Bottom Campus, were constructed.

Elliott is credited with the growth of the university's endowment from $8 million in 1965 to $200 million in 1988. The School of International Affairs was renamed the Elliott School in 1988.
