Juvenile Facility Asked To Change Strategies To Help Youths

SABILLASVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A state juvenile monitoring unit is calling on officials at a juvenile facility to create a comprehensive approach to help detained youths deal with aggressive behavior and past traumas.

The Frederick News-Post reports the Maryland Juvenile Justice Monitoring Unit of the Office of the Attorney General says the per capita number of incidents by youths detained at Victor Cullen Center in Sabillasville has increased since the end of the same quarter last year.

Fights and assaults at the center have decreased, however.

In an investigation, the monitoring unit found several incidents when center staff members weren't prepared to handle out-of-control teens.

Chief of Staff for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services Joseph Cleary says the center is already implementing some of the unit's recommended strategies.
