Jerry Coleman: Why Did The Ravens Deal Their 1st Round Pick?

The Ravens, for the 2nd time in 3 years will not have a first round pick yet GM Ozzie Newsome still called it a "productive night" despite trading out of the opening round.

In the swap, the Ravens dealt their 1st round pick (29th overall) to Minnesota and got the Vikings' No. 35 pick overall (second round) and the 98thoverall selection (fourth round) too. Meaning that they currently now have two picks in the second and two more in the fourth. 9 picks in all.

Newsome indicated "the player they covet is still on the board" and it's not a guarantee they don't make ANOTHER deal - as Ozzie explained "We had a couple of teams call us and we had several players that we liked that are still available for us tomorrow," he said. "To be able to pick up that 98th pick from Minnesota, we think that's just going to be another good player".

The player that the Ravens want is still out there, another reason why the Ravens passed on a first round pick. There are a lot of great players in round one but the team has been to the playoffs four consecutive seasons and can make keys moves in the later rounds with additional picks
