'House Of Cards' Back In Baltimore For Third Season
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Netflix's "House of Cards" announces it will be back for a third season. And the Emmy-award winning show will once again use Baltimore as its backdrop.
Monique Griego has more on what it means for Maryland.
The critically acclaimed show starring Kevin Spacey is set in Washington, D.C., but primarily shot in the Baltimore area.
Now we've learned the program will be back for a third season and it too will film in Charm City.
"I'm enormously pleased that we have landed here in the state of Maryland and have been given such a tremendous welcome," Spacey said.
Last May, a casting call for actors and extras drew huge crowds. There the Maryland Film Office told WJZ about the buzz of the show.
"Kevin Spacey and Beau Williman, the creator of the series, were just raving about shooting in Maryland, shooting in Baltimore," said Jack Gerbes, Maryland Film Office director.
According to the Maryland Film Office, "House of Cards" generated $140 million its first season, providing 2,200 jobs and using 1,800 local vendors.
"The crew, the actors, the vendors, they are very happy to be back here," Gerbes said.
But season three could come with a few snags.
Gov. Martin O'Malley has spearheaded efforts to boost tax incentives for production companies.
But according to WJZ's media partner, the Baltimore Sun, this year the money set aside for film industry tax rebates is less than half of what it was last year.
Industry supporters are hoping to bump that up during the legislative session to make sure filming isn't affected.
Shooting for season three is expected to start next summer.
Season two of "House of Cards" premieres on Netflix on Feb. 14.
All 13 episodes will be available for On Demand streaming.
