BLOG: Happy Thanksgiving

Not the best of Thanksgiving Days weather-wise, but then again, not that bad either as I am sure we have seen worse. We are currently watching a band of precipitation move across the metro area. On the leading edge of this precipitation, there was a bit of sleet mixed in at times. I think a few sleet pellets can continue to mix in with the rain at times north and east early, as there will be some levels in the atmosphere that have enough evaporational cooling and that it wet bulbs to below freezing. The surface should be above freezing throughout the entire forecast area as the precipitation falls, and the duration of sleet should be pretty short as warmer air continues to stream in aloft. No problems expected on the roads. This precipitation band is shifting the southeast as the whole precipitation band slowly shifts northeast. Thus our forecast says morning only rain, and I think this may work out. Maybe mainly in the morning is the best way to play it as I can see the afternoon having some rain.

Overnight, temperatures do not drop and will rise as warmer air continues to get forced into the area as the main surface low tracks well to northwest and a new surface low forms to the north (near NYC) at the triple point. Expect a cloudy night with a few showers late. Fog will likely be an issue. Black Friday will see a few showers around for all the shoppers as the previously mentioned low pressure system tracks off the northeast. Becoming very windy behind the departure of the low as cooler air floods into the region and the pressure gradient force tightens up.

Continued very windy and cool Saturday as the pressure gradient continues rather tight behind the low over Quebec and high pressure centered near the southern Mississippi Valley. We should see plenty of sun. Not nearly as breezy Sunday as the pressure gradient lightens up. Dry and cool Monday with a mix of sun and clouds as an area of high pressure remains in control. Warmer as well. Another cold front looks to approach the area Tuesday with the next chance of rain.
