Good Night To Be An Orioles Fan.....Yeah Whatever
Some excitement in Baltimore, and I use the word 'some' very loosely, as another young pitcher leaves the mound having impressed fans and given them hope for the future. Unfortunately this familiar feeling was here last year, and since this excitement brought fans to the ball park periodically, a manager has been fired and the team's record remains among the worst in the league. Yesterday Jake Arrieta earned his first Major League victory in his first Major League outing, doing so against the New York Yankees who have earned the right to be called Champions I might add. Arrieta did not bring the 200 reporters or sell out the stadium in the same way Strasburg did, but he did provide a fan base in desperate need of a reason to cheer, to be able to do so on one night. Last year the arrival of Matt Wieters brought much of the National Media to Camden Yards and gave the city that excitement that had been missing for so long. A year later and Matt is struggling with a .241 batting average with 4 HR and 17 RBI. In my opinion it is much too early to tell but with the history this organization has had with evaluating talent the thought certainly creeps in. Wieters was sold as a sure thing and in his short career has already become a Sports Illustrated cover boy, so he can't become a bust can he? Just as Arrieta did last night, Brad Bergesen captivated the audience on his opening night and earned his spot on that mythical ballclub known as the "Orioles Future". Brad's struggles this year have been well documented as he was sent down to find his command as if it was lost or dropped on the way to work much in the same way your wallet would. Maybe so or maybe Brad's not the pitcher the city hoped for. Brian Matusz also earned a victory in his first start and had a very promising beginning to his 2010 campaign. He has since struggled, leaving many to wonder what it is they actually have. What they do have is a gold glove winner by the name of Adam Jones who was the first Orioles player to win that award since Mike Mussina did in 1999. He blows bubbles as he runs down fly balls YADAYADAYA. Much of the talk this year surrounding Adam has not been as positive. The bottom line being that nights like last night are nice to watch, but a year removed from such nights last year and the Orioles boast an unimpressive or impressive (depending on how you look at it) 17-43 record. With all of that said guys, stay positive. Read the Secret or something.
