Fun while it lasted...

Jeremy Guthrie just wasn't good enough tonight -- not for the New York Yankees' lineup. Bottom line: The Yankees have been running circles around the Orioles all night. Dave Trembley said pregame, "We dont match up with the Red Sox and Yankees star-wise." Well... unfortunately for the O's, it showed tonight.

Here's the recap: The sceond inning killed the Orioles when Guthrie took the mound already down 2-0 and hit Jorge Posada (who had to leave the game), allowed a single to Curtis Granderson and a two-run triple to Nick Swisher. Swisher actually almost passed Granderson who almost passed Posada. They were on each other's tails rounding third -- it was ugly. Down 5-0 in the third, the hot-hitting Robinson Cano hit a solo HR (he entered the game hitting .389) to make it 6-0. The O's added a run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI groundout from Miguel Tejada.

Hendrickson replaced Guthrie in the fifth with two outs and Nick Johnson on first (Guthrie walked him to lead off the inning). Cano doubled to center and Francisco Cervelli, who replaced Posada in the second, hit an RBI single to center to make it 7-1. Jeter then recorded an RBI of his own in the sixth with a single to right to make it 8-1 Yanks. Cla Meredith replaced Hendrickson with two outs in the sixth and got ARod to ground out.

Nolan Reimold added a run in the sixth with a sac fly to right that scored Miguel Tejada and Nick  Markakis continued to show improvement at the plate... going 3-for-4 with a double in the first, single in the third and a solo homoe run in the seventh. 8-3 Yankees.

There you have it folks. Not good.

Trembley also stressed the importance of playing good baseball against the AL East Red Sox and Yankees, who the O's are in the middle of a 12-game stretch. Well after tonight's game, the O's have one more here against New York then three straight vs. the Red Sox before heading to the Bronx for a three-game series.
