Fort Detrick Restricts Drones To Housing Area Of Army Post
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The Army is restricting the use of remote-controlled aircraft at Fort Detrick in Frederick and its Forest Glen Annex in Silver Spring.
The Frederick News-Post reported Tuesday that the drone restrictions were enacted last month.
The policy limits drone use to Fort Detrick's single-family housing community and a nearby field. Drones are banned entirely from Forest Glen, which is within a 30-mile drone no-fly zone around Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The policy also limits drone photography. It warns that posting photos or video of "sensitive sites" may trigger a federal law-enforcement investigation.
Fort Detrick is home to the military's flagship biological defense laboratory and several federal civilian biodefense labs. Infectious disease research is also conducted at Forest Glen.
