Follow Up: Ownership and Timeline
I've gotten some strong response from my "it's not an ownership issue" posting, and the Ken Rosenthal Fox report that I added to my post. Regarding the Fox story and the complaints that Peter Angelos waited too long to hire Andy MacPhail:
The Fox story was alarming on its surface. MacPhail has said he's "batting a thousand" with Angelos in terms of getting full cooperation with ownership. Here's what Peter Angelos had to say to Buster Olney of ESPN in response to the Fox report:
"Quite simply, Cal Ripken did not offer to become part of the Oriole organization in any secondary position, such as manager or as an assistant to [team president] Andy MacPhail, or in some kind of support role of MacPhail," Angelos said. "If he wants to make such a proposal, I'd like to hear about it."
"I see Cal often, and I consider him a friend," Angelos said. "From a standpoint of rejecting Cal Ripken, that's an impossibility. If this [story] is coming from him, I'd like to sit down and talk to him."
To the timeline issue: In saying you always have to blame the owner for not making the right decisions, are you saying it was not a good decision to hire MacPhail? It may have taken a long time but to have waited longer would have been worse.
Here's a parallel: as owner of the Cleveland Browns (who became the Ravens) Art Modell chose to run his team for the most part without a titular general manager. He made Ozzie Newsome his full-fledged GM and the franchise eventually won its first Super Bowl. Modell may have waited 30 years, but he improved his team and should be recognized for it.
