FedEx Sees Busiest Day Of The Year

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Ten days until Christmas.

If it seems like it's closing in fast, try delivering packages on time.

As Alex DeMetrick reports, for FedEx workers, it doesn't get any busier than Monday.

Whether it's on the conveyor belt or already on the truck, the holidays are now in high gear.

For FedEx, Dec. 15 is the busiest day of the year.

At the distribution plant near BWI-Thurgood Marshall Airport, FedEx site manager Sam Stephanovich said, "12,500 packages at this location today. We typically do about 8,500, so it's a pretty good spike."

That's only a fraction of FedEx worldwide. More than 22.6 million packages will be moved Monday -- 290 million by Christmas.

The last mile carried up to the front door.

"I do the Roland park area, cross keys area, Gilman, Bryn Mahr -- those schools," said Gabaha Byrd, a FedEx employee.

This one facility serves most of the Baltimore metro region.

But while it's work, it's also a welcome burst of business at the end of the year.

"I love the overtime," Byrd added.

"We're looking forward to the season," Stephanovich added. "Go out there and spend some money and trust FedEx to deleiver your packages for you."

According to FedEx, the last day to ship a ground delivery in time for Christmas is this Wednesday. The Air Express deadline is December 23.
