Executive Named Washington County Schools Head

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Washington County Board of Education has named an executive at Scholastic Inc. the next superintendent of public schools. 

Clayton M. Wilcox, 55, has been a superintendent in Florida and Louisiana. A resident of Westfield, N.J., he has been senior vice president for education and corporate relations at Scholastic Inc. in New York City since 2008. 

His hiring is contingent upon the approval of the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools and county school board's approval of his contract. 

The decision was announced Tuesday. Wilcox would succeed Elizabeth Morgan, who retired in February. 

Washington County Public Schools have about 22,200 students and more than 1,700 teachers.
