Ex-Legal Aid Official Gets 30 Months For $1M Theft

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Federal prosecutors say the former chief of finance at the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau was sentenced to 30 months after pleading guilty to stealing more than $1 million from the agency.

Fifty-eight-year-old Benjamin Louis King of Gwynn Oak was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore.

King was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay restitution.

Prosecutors say King and an accomplice formed an office supply company that overcharged Legal Aid and pocketed the excess. Prosecutors say the company did not have a warehouse and only one customer, the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau.
