Ex-County Executive Leopold Volunteers At Food Bank

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Former Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold is doing his court-ordered community service at a local food bank.

The 70-year-old Leopold, who served 30 days in jail, was ordered to complete 400 hours of community service after he was convicted in January of misconduct in office. According to trial testimony, Leopold forced members of his security detail to perform campaign work and another county employee to empty his urinary catheter bag.

Bruce Michalec, executive director of the Anne Arundel County Food Bank in Crownsville, confirmed Leopold's work there to The Capital of Annapolis.

"It's a place of redemption here, and I don't want to invade his privacy," Michalec said. "But he's doing some office work and using his talents there."

Leopold is one of a dozen former inmates performing community service at the food bank, Michalec said. "They have to start somewhere, and this is the place to do it," he added.

Leopold's community service was arranged by the Anne Arundel County Community Service Program.

A spokesman for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said Leopold has until December to complete his community service. Leopold had completed 48 hours as of Monday.

In addition to jail time and community service, Leopold must pay a $100,000 fine. He gets a $25,000 discount if pays that directly to Anne Arundel County.
