Drew Brees=Bell Bottoms
Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports just released his Quarterback rankings for the upcoming season and I must say it's foolish at best. As I run down the list, I don't have too much of an issue with 10-32. 10-1, on the other hand, whiffed pretty badly on a few spots. Ben Roethlisberger has won 2 Super Bowls in his very short time in the league and has done so with a bunch of ZERO's on the offensive line. Now we can all agree that a team's offensive line is the most important piece and must be solid in order to win. Big Ben has led the league in sacks and, in my opinion, has to be in the mix for avoiding sacks as well. The man is impossible to bring down in big game situations and will always find a way to beat your team. Believe me I know as a few years back Ben went into Indy and beat the Colts when they were heavily favored. Ben Roethlisberger is simply a winner and deserves a higher spot. He is ranked at 7th in Cole's list but ranks much higher in mine. Keep in mind that a very important factor for my list is who'd I rather have leading my team on that final drive of the game. This is a key element and not one found in statistics. Because of this Ben Roethlisberger is 3rd on my list. The next big discrepancy on this list is at number 3. Now I wont be one to defend Tom Brady, and I almost feel dirty doing this, but he has as many super bowl rings as his positioning. Until further notice Tom Brady is my number 2 Quarterback. Now #18 is a machine and as Jason Cole pointed out in his article would be first if it wasn't for that interception in the Super Bowl. Yes the one Reggie Wayne quit on. So until wide receivers start taking credit for wins and losses as Quarterbacks do, Peyton remains NUMBER 1. Jason Cole doesn't seem to agree with this point, hence his ranking of Drew Brees in that top spot. Yes, Bell Bottom Drew. I do admit Drew Brees is a hell of a quarterback and would probably crack my top 5, but first?? Of course not! All of this Drew Brees love is a fad. It's the sexy story of the day. He is very accurate but were league writers singing his praises when the Saints lost to the 3-13 Tampa Bay Buccaneers AT HOME? What Drew Brees did in Miami this year is highlight the fact that a pass rush is key in winning football games. He dinked and dunked his way to a championship. Now don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with that, but would I rather have Drew Brees under center than Peyton Manning, or Tom Brady??? No Way,and you wouldn't either. And to be completely honest with you, I'd take Phillip Rivers over Drew Brees on any Sunday. He's won big game after big game and even did so with a torn ACL. His toughness is every bit as important as Brees' silly pre game speeches. If you don't trust me, ask the San Diego Chargers. They felt the same way.
