Dewey, Ocean City Rank Among Cleanest U.S. Beaches
DEWEY BEACH, Del. (AP) -- Two beaches along the Maryland and Delaware shore have made the list of the nation's cleanest beaches.
Delaware's Dewey Beach and Maryland's Ocean City Beach 6 have earned a five-star rating. The Natural Resources Defense Council found that they were among a dozen beaches that follow best practices and violated health standards less than 5 percent of the time.
The environmental group is releasing its annual assessment of 3,000 beach sites on Wednesday.
Delaware's beach water quality ranked first among 30 states in the study. The environmental group said none of the water samples collected at the two beaches in Maryland or Delaware exceeded state standards.
The report also lists beaches that are "repeat offenders" for their persistent contamination problems.
