COVID In Maryland: Second-Highest Daily Count With Over 3.2K Cases, Record-High Hospitalizations For Second Day
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- The state added 3,202 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours as hospitalizations continue to rise this week.
There are now 1,720 Marylanders hospitalized, breaking Wednesday's record of 1,715. Of those, 416 are in ICU beds- the highest since June 7- but no change since the day before. There are 1,304 in acute care.
Health officials say it's putting a strain on staffing.
"That is our number one concern, making sure we have the right beds and the right staff to care for the patients that we are expecting to come," Karen Doyle, Senior VP of Nursing and Operations at Shock Trauma, said.
Doyle said compared to the start of the pandemic, hospitals are better prepared with PPE gear and supplies. But, as the cases climb, so does the concern for available hospital beds.
"It's two weeks post-Thanksgiving and the predictions are that the volumes are going to continue to grow as we move into the holiday season and the hospitalizations will continue to increase," Doyle said.
"Right now, we need everybody to adhere to wearing masks, social distancing, staying in your inner circle," she added.
Forty-nine more Marylanders have died in the last 24 hours, a total of 4,850.
The statewide positivity rate is 7.71%, remaining virtually flat since Wednesday. In the last day, the state has administered 49,110 coronavirus tests.
