Chesapeake Bay Program Executive Council To Meet

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Chesapeake Bay Program's Executive Council meets next week for its annual meeting and efforts to meet tough, new pollution reduction goals are on the agenda.

The council meets Monday in Richmond. Members include the governors of all six states in the bay watershed, the mayor of Washington, and the head of the federal Environmental Protection Agency. The council sets policy for the joint state and federal effort that has led bay restoration.

The states are working to implement a new EPA strategy issued in response to a presidential executive order after decades of state-led efforts failed to achieve restoration goals. The strategy, however, has been met by court challenges from agriculture and development groups.

The bay watershed covers Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York.
