Carroll Co. Expects To Have Enough Salt For Winter
WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- Carroll County officials expect to have enough salt to treat roads for the rest of the winter.
Bruce Lockard, bureau chief of road operations, says the county started the season with 8,500 tons of salt left over from last year. More was ordered, and Lockard expects to get the remainder in a few weeks.
The county has 63 routes that must be plowed and salted. Road crews use between 500 to 700 tons of salt to treat roads during every snowstorm.
The salt budget for fiscal year 2011 is $964,000, which is up from $874,000 in 2010. That year, the county spent $1,015,000 on salt because of several huge snowstorms.
