BLOG: Welcome To Spring!

Although the three coldest months of the year statistically are December, January and February, the seasons are based on the Earth's rotation around the sun on its axis.  Today, the sun is lined up directly over the equator and that gives us nearly equal amounts of sunlight and darkness - hence, equinox.  The March equinox is also referred to as the vernal equinox.  So at 7:21 p.m., spring officially begins.

Just as spring arrives, the cooldown continues.  We only topped out at 50 degrees this afternoon.  That is back below average, and a 30 degree swing from Friday.  We are in store for a real roller coaster ride of temperatures this upcoming week, courtesy of a few storms and a weather pattern change.

The first storm is on its way.  Clouds will take over tonight, and then some rain will arrive late tonight.  Expect spotty rain around tomorrow and maybe even an afternoon thunderstorm.  Warmer air will arrive with this part of the storm and we will be back in the 60s.  The storm will get out of here for Tuesday, but there is another right on its tail.  We never get a solid break between the two on Tuesday so there will be some sunshine but still a lot of clouds and the chance for a shower.

The second storm comes in later Tuesday and will stick around through early Thursday.  This one will drag much colder air down with it.  That will drag the snow line down into Pennsylvania and western Maryland.  For the rest of us, this is another round of solid rainfall.  Highs will drop into the 50s Wednesday and probably won't get out of the 40s on Friday.  That cooler air will linger into the weekend.
