BLOG: The Storm Clears Out

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The storm is gone Wednesday, but is pummeling New England with 20-30" of snow and such high winds that it has officially become a blizzard. We are all familiar with those from last year, right? If you forget, remember that blizzard doesn't just imply snowfall but winds gusting over 30 mph with reduced visibility to 1/4' or lower.

When the storm moved through Maryland Tuesday night, it did mix with rain and sleet across southern Maryland up into D.C. and even all the way up to Frederick County briefly. Snowfall totals ranged from 2" at BWI-Marshall to 1" in D.C. and upwards of 5" in Harford and Cecil Counties. Here is a link to a list of more snowfall totals from the National Weather Service click, here.

As the storm is moving away, the winds have really picked up out of the west-northwest. Gusts have been topping 30 mph this afternoon, bringing the wind chill down into the teens for the metro area and single digits in western Maryland. This wind has also connected with the lakes, so there are some flurries flying around the state this afternoon with additional snow in Garrett County - where a winter storm warning remains in effect through 6 a.m. tomorrow.

The flurries will die down tonight, but the winds will continue through the day tomorrow. That will lock in the cold air. Expect highs only to top out near 30 degrees tomorrow with a wind chill in the teens most of the afternoon. Then the wind will lessen by Friday but the cold air will linger. Highs will still only be in the low 30s. However, some warmer air is on the way for the weekend. Our average high is 41 degrees. We will actually go back above that average (slightly) on Sunday and maybe hang there through early next week.

A weak storm will be passing north of us this weekend. Clouds will move through the area and maybe some snow showers in the mountains, but there isn't a whole lot of moisture with this one. We will be watching for another storm down the line sometime early next week - maybe Tuesday. If it does connect with the warmer air, which it looks like it will do, this storm could be more of a rain maker than snow maker. But we will watch and keep you posted.
