Blog: Sunny Sunday
The severe storms and heavy rain from yesterday are gone, but their results linger.
The National Weather Service went to northern Carroll County today to assess a tornado report. What they do in these situations, is take a look at the damage level to see how strong the storm was, take a look at the damage pattern to see if there was any rotation in the storm, and then go back to compare their findings with what they saw on the radar to decide whether it was a tornado or thunderstorm that produced all the damage. The whole process takes some time, and whenever we see them issue a report, we will forward it along.
In addition to severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes, there was a lot of rain with this storm system. Most areas were doused with 1-2" worth of rain. The rain has come to an end, allowing the urban and coastal areas to recover but it takes longer for the rivers and creeks/streams/rivers that feed into the major rivers. This water has to cycle through all these creeks/streams/rivers before moving through the major rivers and eventually getting out into the Bay. That's why there are river flood warnings in effect for most counties along and that feed into both the Susquehanna and Potomac. Here is a more complete list of rainfall totals:
Even though the worst weather left overnight, we still had gusty winds and very isolated showers across northern Maryland today because of that same storm system. The center was spinning off to our north, but everything is finally calming down as it exits via New England tonight. However, this stormy weather pattern is going to continue for at least another week or so. Tomorrow, we turn our focus to the west as a new storm moves our way.
The warm front will slowly start moving our way Monday. Expect sunshine to give way to increasing clouds. There is the slightest chance for a shower tomorrow, but a slightly better chance Tuesday as the warm front lines up right off to our north in PA. The warm front will push northward Wednesday, really putting us in the warm air Wednesday afternoon before the cold front part of the storm comes through later Wednesday. There is the chance for showers or thunderstorms when that happens.
Highs will be in the upper 60s/near 70 tomorrow, near 70 Tuesday, and closer to 80 on Wednesday. That will get knocked down the second half of the week when the cold front swings through here. Then another storm moves our way Friday into Saturday.
ATTENTION TEACHERS AND STUDENTS:
Our 4th annual Weather Field Trip Day at Camden Yards is right around the corner. This year, it will be Thursday, May 26. If you are unfamiliar with the program, it's a day full of fun. We start out with an action, graphics-filled weather program on the field that features helpers like Nicole Sherry (head groundskeeper), Chris Strong from the National Weather Service and, of course, the Bird. Then, everyone takes a lunch break before enjoying an afternoon Orioles game.
