BLOG: Rain, Storms Ahead
Another day, another round of rain and thunderstorms.
The storm that moved our way yesterday is spinning over Ohio today. It's cut off from the jetstream, so there is nothing to push it along. This storm is going to stick around for the rest of the week. We do not have all day rainouts coming our way, but as long as this storm is around, it will produce rounds of scattered showers and thunderstorms each and every day.
Clouds and spotty drizzle this morning gave way to sunshine for most of the afternoon. However, that sunshine fired the thunderstorms this evening. Thunderstorms are below the severe criteria (defined as winds of 58+ mph, hail 1" or larger, and the potential for a tornado). They will continue through the evening, before winding down overnight. Scattered showers could linger through the night. Clouds will mix with sunshine tomorrow, and there will be another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Then, the low pressure center from the storm that is down here at the surface will drift slightly off to the south Tuesday and Wednesday. That would likely produce more clouds and knock back temperatures again. But basically, that's the forecast for each of the next few days with the large upper-level low spinning over the Mid-Atlantic through at least Thursday.
There are signs that the large upper-level low driving this storm will weaken and lift off to the northeast Friday and Saturday. Since the whole weather pattern is stopped up right now, we will have to watch this closely to make sure it does start moving again by Friday - so stay tuned.
ATTENTION TEACHERS AND STUDENTS:
There is still time! Our fourth annual Weather Field Trip Day at Camden Yards is right around the corner. This year, it will be Thursday, May 26. If you are unfamiliar with the program, it's a day full of fun. We start out with an action, graphics-filled weather program on the field that features helpers like Nicole Sherry (head groundskeeper), Chris Strong from the National Weather Service and, of course, the Bird. Then, everyone takes a lunch break before enjoying an afternoon Orioles game.
