BLOG: Blast Of White Stuff
There's no real change in thinking as far as the upcoming snow is concerned. However, have to take the high up today (again), and doing the same for tomorrow as a pre-emptive strike. With the sun coming out in the wake of the storm tomorrow and a downsloping northwest wind, should still try to briefly get to near 40 despite the crashing 850's. In the meantime, radar has some areas of snow breaking out well in advance of the storm itself. Most of, not all of this, is aloft, but we should cover for a passing flurry this afternoon.
There will be no less than partial sunshine today, but the day will end on a cloudier note as a fast-moving storm system in the Midwest sweeps to the mid-Atlantic coast by late tonight.
Snow associated with it should start early this evening, and its "peak intensity" will probably occur between 9 p.m. and 2 or 3 a.m. tomorrow, a scenario which favors the ability for many road crews to treat the area streets and highways while there is a little less vehicular traffic. There may even be a tendency for snow to mix with sleet or just plain rain across the Delmarva Peninsula or in areas east of the Bay for a period of two or three hours tonight.
On the heels of this fast-moving low pressure system later tomorrow, tomorrow night and Saturday, some of the season's coldest air to date will be getting unleashed on the area, with temperatures mostly in the teens on both Friday night and Saturday night, and no higher than the mid or upper-20s during the daytime. Even Sunday looks quite cold. The next chance for snow around here will be on Tuesday/Tuesday night into Wednesday, and we'll have to see just how far NORTH this apparent low pressure system located in the southern-branch of the jet stream will track. For what it's worth, last night's 00z run of the European global model has trended farther EAST than previous runs with where this storm will be going. And the zero-degrees Celsius line at the 850-millibar level is draped right over the region. Next Tuesday could be very interesting.
Have a good day !!!
