BLOG: A Taste Of Summer
Summertime weather has arrived in Maryland - at least for a few days. We topped out in the 80s Sunday, hit 85 degrees this afternoon, and will top out at or near 80 the next two days. At the same time, the storm track is meandering around us but will eventually bring in more thunderstorms.
A new low pressure is moving along the front that stalled over us yesterday. That low is forcing the front to start moving again. Today, the front pushed far enough to our north that most of the thunderstorms stayed away. A few thunderstorms may still pop up this evening, especially across western Maryland, but nothing like yesterday. The front will reload off to our west tomorrow before moving our way later Wednesday and Thursday. There is the chance for a few thunderstorms tomorrow before that happens, especially across western Maryland. Then, the thunderstorm chance will increase Wednesday and Thursday when the center of the storm gets closer. And in this kind of atmosphere, any thunderstorm could become strong or severe - especially Wednesday and Thursday.
When this storm wraps up and leaves, it will take the really warm air with it. It will still be mild with highs in the 70s Thursday but we drop down to the 60s on Friday. This is actually closer to our average.
We will get a small break from this weather pattern before a new storm moves our way later this weekend through early next week.
As a side note, this is going to be another huge severe weather outbreak over the middle of the country. It is starting today and will continue until the storm wraps up and moves our way. There will be numerous tornadoes and some long lived. And this round will feature a lot of flooding. The same areas continue to get pounded and many of these places already have streams, creeks, and rivers battling flood stage. The flooding will hit Arkansas, southern Missouri, southern Illinois, and western Kentucky particularly hard.
ATTENTION TEACHERS AND STUDENTS:
Our fourth annual Weather Field Trip Day at Camden Yards is right around the corner. This year, it will be Thursday, May 26. If you are unfamiliar with the program, it's a day full of fun. We start out with an action, graphics-filled weather program on the field that features helpers like Nicole Sherry (head groundskeeper), Chris Strong from the National Weather Service and, of course, the Bird. Then, everyone takes a lunch break before enjoying an afternoon Orioles game.
