BALTIMORE (WJZ)—There's Black Friday, Cyber Monday and now there's Small Business Saturday, and Baltimore is part of the celebration.
Ron Matz has more on how supporting locally owned businesses, especially at holiday time, can help your community.
Grek Novik is the epitome of the small businessman. He opened Greg's Bagels 23 years ago. He'll be part of the celebration of Small Business Saturday at Belvedere Square.
"I think it's wonderful," Novik said. "Finally some of the powers that be in this country do understand that small business is the grease that keeps this country going."
It's another busy day at Atwater's, famous for its great soups and delicious baked goods. Ned Atwater opened in Belvedere Square eight and a half years ago.
"We've grown our business with the support of the community," Atwater said. "They know us and we know them. It's fun and that's why we're in business. A big business doesn't have that. We know the first names of the folks who live right here in Belvedere Square."
Saturday you'll find big discounts at all stores, including Nouveau Contemporary Goods.
"We'll do 25 percent off the entire day Saturday, champagne shopping, free gift wrapping," said Lee Whitehead, of Nouveau Contemporary Goods. "Every store will do a different discount. Santa will be strolling through the market. It will be a fun day. Instead of going through the big box stores and the fighting of the crowds and getting run over by the carts, you can come to a unique store and get a unique gift instead of cookie cutter stuff you get at every single store."
And at Greg's Bagels, Novik says they're offering customers a 10 percent discount on holiday orders.
On one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year, a reminder of what it takes to be the little guy in the economic fight.
"If your definition of making it is working six days a week, 11 hours a day for 23 years," Novik said, "yes, we have made it. We're still in business, which these days is quite an accomplishment."
This is the second annual Small Business Saturday. The market at Belvedere Square will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
