Baseball at Camden... Finally
The five best words ... Opening. Day. At. Camden. Yards.
Before the start of the game Manager Dave Trembley said he told Brad Bergesen three months ago he was going to pitch today and Orioles fans have waited a long time to see him back on the big league mound. A healthy Bergensen got off to a shaky start when he allowed three runs in the first. But the O's offense matched that with three runs of their own, Miguel Tejada hit a two-run single and Nick Markakis scored on Nolan Reimold's walk. By the second inning, there was already bad news from the O's side as Brian Roberts left with an abdominal strain.
The Blue Jays held a 5-3 lead through the next four innings until the O's offense came back with two runs in the fifth. Miguel Tejada was quite impressive going 3-for-5 with four RBI -- including a two-run HR in the fifth -- and new first baseman Garrett Atkins kept his bat hot going 2-for-4.
The Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow, acquired from Seattle and converted into a starter, also struggled in his first outing with the Jays. Morrow, who last year in 26 games went 2-4 with a 4.39 ERA, wasn't much better than Bergesen, lasting just five innings and allowing four hits, five earned runs and five walks.
The problem wasn't the offense today ... it was the pitching. The bullpen once again was impressive, Hendrickson and Johnson threw a combined 3.1 HITLESS innings and allowed just one walk while striking out five. But Cla Meredith had to save the struggling closer in the 9th. With the O's up by one, Gonzalez allowed one walk, one hit, two earned runs to ruin the Opening Day victory and give the Jays a 7-6 win.
Fun note: Opening Day last year against the Yankees drew 284 less fans to Camden Yards. See... Baltimore doesn't need the Yankees in town for a party... sorry it had to be spoiled with the loss.
Listen in later for all Post Game reaction from the clubhouse.
