Baltimore Government Offices Open, Offer Liberal Leave

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore government offices will be open Wednesday and Thursday, and offer liberal leave for non-essential employees in the wake of a storm that dumped record-breaking amounts of snow on the city's streets.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said at a news conference Tuesday evening that garbage collection has been canceled for Wednesday, but that the city's landfill and drop-off centers will be open.

Department of Transportation Director William Johnson said the city's main streets have been cleared, and that roughly 1,400 pieces of equipment have been deployed to clear the streets. Williams added that he received an urgent request from a fuel terminal asking the city to clear a route so tankers can refeul. As of Tuesday evening, Johnson said, that route has been cleared.

City schools will remain closed on Wednesday.
