Baltimore City Police Officer Honored For Car Accident Response

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- The father of two children involved in a traffic accident with their mom wanted to show his appreciation for the officer's response, and as Pat Warren reports, the mayor followed through.

Baltimore City Mayor Catherine Pugh made a point that even with the transitions taking place in the police department, officers come to work everyday to protect and serve.

Officer Pierre Dolcine received the City's Exceptional Service Award after a father wrote the mayor expressing high regard for the way the officer helped his family through a serious traffic accident.

"Officer Dolcine was sincere, genuine and present. He had his daughter smiling soon after this horrific crash," Pugh says.

Officer Dolcine says it was all in a day's work.

"I've been doing this for 15 years, I haven't changed I haven't wavered," Dolcine says.

"We know that even though we are under Consent Decree that the majority of our police come to protect and serve," Pugh says.

Under the weight of civil rights violations, corruption, and rising homicide rate, a father took time to write a letter of thanks.

"To get a letter from a citizen to say it was his attitude, how he handled the situation, how he calmed down "my daughters" deserved a recognition and just a reminder to the public that we have police officers on our force who care about our community and who want to make sure that we're safe," Pugh says.

"We're fathers, uncles, grandparents, brothers and sisters so we are one of you," Dolcine says.

The family involved in the accident Officer Dolcine responded to is said to be doing fine.

Just last weekend there was a memorial service for Baltimore's fallen heroes.
