Baltimore Chefs Go Behind Bars To Help Hungry Kids

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- One in six Maryland children struggle with hunger. Now some of the best chefs in Baltimore are stepping in to help---and they're going behind bars to do so.

Jessica Kartalija has more.

At Wit & Wisdom Tavern, Chef Zack Mills is going behind bars.

Chefs from around town---normally not used to bartending---will be slinging drinks for the night. Six of Baltimore's best chefs will create a signature cocktail for Chefs Behind Bars, where all proceeds will benefit No Kid Hungry.

"We are focused on expanding school breakfasts, providing after school meals and making sure that summer meals are available to every kid who needs one," said No Kid Hungry director David Sloan.

Full disclosure: Mary Bubala and Jessica Kartalija have the difficult task of judging.

And when you see what's going into these concoctions, it won't be easy.

Chefs Behind Bars is Wednesday, June 1, at Wit on the Water at the Four Seasons.

"To be able to invited some of my buddies, chefs from around town, to come here and have some fun and do it for a great was just a no brainer," Mills said.

Sixteen million children in the US struggle with hunger and these chefs want to help and have fun at the same time.

"It is really encouraging to see that people from all walks of life care about this issue," Sloan said.
