9th Anniversary 9-11 Observation
I was catching a lot of the news coverage of the 9th anniv. this morning on the various networks. Among the items that struck me and disturbed me was the interview with former Chief of Staff Andy Card, who was the one that whispered in President Bush's ear when he was speaking at the elementary school. Card said today that he told Bush "another plane has hit the 2nd World Trade Center Building. We're under attack." Then, Card said Bush stayed with the students for 6 1/2 to 7 more minutes before finally leaving. Card said it was the right move, not to show panic. Are you kidding me? You're the President. Don't you want to be instantly informed and up to speed. Never mind, if you need to make an immediate decision, do you want to have to excuse yourself from the classroom then? They say he was updated after he left the classroom. That's 7 minutes when the leader of the free world is in the dark while the country was in crisis. This is not a partisan viewpoint on my part. I am neither Republican nor Democrat, just an American. That refresher course from arguably the worst day in our country's history is galling for anyone. For my part, as a sportscaster at FOX 45, I remember in the coming days after the attack, having to sheepishly update people on whether the NFL games would be played, and personally feeling like 'who really cares.'
